SKS -Autovarusteet

I was asked by my friend would I be interested to design van shelving system and the company identity as well. I decided to set up a company with them as one of the founders. My responsebility was product design and brand identity. This is the first company where I’m one of the entrepneuners.

All started with one rough protype model of which I based the dimensions. I designed all in 3D and made drawings for subcontractor to manufacture. Shelving system is a quite simple, but I had to make some adjustments for the tolerances on the way to get all parts join together smoothly.

At the same time I was studying business strategy and management studies and got plenty of helpful knowledge about how to run and develop business.

When the product was finished and ready for the market it was time to design the brand identity and marketing material. First I designed the logo.

Following the marketing material design wich contains layout design for the documents, businesscard, brochyres and assembly instructions.

Because of 3D model it was easy to pull of some renderings for the marketing material.

For the www-pages I used the WordPress theme and modified it to suit our style with color and images. With rendered images I made product presentation slideshow for the frontpage. Take a look here. (www.sks-autovarusteet.fi)

Whole process took about one year aside of normal freelance business what I did at the time. Have to say that it have been one of the best learning processes of my career. I learned so much about everything. Thank you Antti and Henkka 😉

BMW – Cafe Racer concept

I made this BMW Cafe racer sketch just for sake to understant what is the idea and philosophy behind cafe racer culture and design. I read articles about how to design cafe racer and what are the ”rules” for it. A lot of youger I used to drive moped and dirt bikes, but haven’t driven proper motorcycle ever. So I liked much about history and culture behind cafe racing. I decided to base my design for 80’s BMW R100. (read more about BMW R100 here.)

So I made this sketch for fun and dropped it on to my online portfolio. Almost a year went by before something unexpected happened. I got contacted by gentleman from southern U.S. and he was asking would I be interested to make some sketches for him to build his own cafe racer. So he gave me brief about his thoughts and I sketched several options. Here you can see the final design below.

He built the bike by himself and had to make some changes for the design during the building process.

Building took some time, but finally He sent some pictures about the bike fully assembled and ready to hit the road.

It was fun to help and see the design finally in real. Thank you Gaston for this opportunity and thank you letting me help you!

Inktober 2016

I was watching Jake Parker’s Youtube video about Inktober and decided to participate too. ->link for the video.

He created Inktober in 2009 as a challenge to improve his inking skills and develop positive drawing habits. It has since grown into a worldwide endeavor with thousands of artists taking on the challenge every year. ->Read more here.

Rules are simply, during October draw something with ink every day and post it on your instagram. It Is easy, grab your pen and start drawing.

Here is some of my inktober illustrations what I made 2016.

In the beginning I felt that it was hard to find time for drawing every day, but after first week it started to feel more natural. There is topic for each day which help a lot, but still It is good for one’s imagination to think what to draw. Actually I found myself thinking around the topic during my workday, so at the evening when it was time to draw I knew what to do.

I warmly recommend this challenge for everybody. It gives you a schedule and and project which helps a lot when dealing with actual client projects.

Elo Elämä – Biology book illustrations

Late October 2014 I got a chance to create illustrations for Otava publishing company Ltd. They were asking would I be interested to make all illustrations for their educational biology books. I have had a dream to do illustrations for education purposes for a while, but haven’t sent portfolio for any publishers yet. So I felt very lucky.

When you create illustrations for educational purposes you have to make illustrations a quite realistic and try to present subject simply enough. It is sometimes challenging, but rewarding at the same time. Knowledge about that your illustrations may last over ten years and help induviduals to learn important things is something great!

I end up making over 200 induvidual illustrations for the Elo Elämä -biology textbook and excercise book. Some complex scenario type of illustrations in color for textbook below.

And lot of small illustrations in black and white for the excercise book below.
